Potassium is involved along with sodium and chlorine in the regulation of water balance. Another key feature is the control of blood pressure and heart rate. Also in energy metabolism and in the transmission of nerve impulses potassium plays an important role.

The daily demand for adults is 2 grams. Normally, the demand is covered through a balanced diet. Malnutrition, taking certain medications (eg, laxatives, dewatering agent, insulin) or persistent fluid loss through diarrhea or vomiting may cause deficiency symptoms.


Potassium deficiency manifests itself in the form of muscle weakness, constipation, heart rhythm disorders.
